What to Do for Sinus Headaches
Overview
Sinus headaches plague many people. They can be brought on from colds, allergies or even changes in the weather. Dealing with sinus headaches can be very painful and just as frustrating. There are several steps to take to relieve and even rid yourself of sinus headaches.
Step 1
Follow any doctor's prescriptions or advice before using painkillers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Often, sinus headaches are caused by sinus infections, and an antibiotic may be prescribed to treat the infection. It is also important to get tested for allergies if your sinus headaches are chronic. You may be allergic to certain environmental allergens, pet dander or even dust and dust mites. All of these can trigger sinus headaches.
Step 2
Use a neti pot for nasal irrigation. Sinus headaches occur when the nasal and sinus passages are congested with mucus or are inflamed. Using a neti pot with a saline solution to cleanse the nasal passages and irrigate the sinuses is a fairly simple yet very effective way to soothe and relieve your sinuses. Using a neti pot every day will keep your sinuses clean, will help reduce inflammation and may help relieve your headaches with consistent use.
Step 3
Set up a humidifier in your home. Too often the cause of sinus headaches and even the common cold is caused by the drying out of the mucus membranes in your sinuses, nose and throat. Using a humidifier, especially in cold and dry weather, will help keep you breathing clearly and keep your sinuses at the proper moisture level.
Step 4
Purchase an air purifier for your home. An air purifier will help reduce a significant amount of dust and other airborne allergens. This is helpful to those suffering from household allergies that trigger sinus congestion and in turn, headaches. In some cases, removing carpets and encasing your bedding in dust mite-proof material is necessary and can dramatically reduce sinus-related headaches.
Step 5
Use over-the-counter decongestants to relieve the pressure and congestion in your sinuses. Treating congestion symptoms will usually relieve the sinus headache. Nasal sprays made of a saline solution or decongestant medication are effective in relieving congestion. Using a vapo-rub made with ingredients like eucalyptus oil and menthol can temporarily relieve congestion as well.
