Consider backpacking or camping. What's more romantic than spending time sleeping under the stars? Either get a site near a major resort area (it's lots cheaper than a hotel) or do a road trip, staying at a different site each night. All of America's natural parks have both the beauty and history to make for excellent honeymoon destinations.

Go to a nearby foreign destination. If you don't have the money to fly to Tahiti, how about checking out Mexico instead? And don't limit yourself to the tourist overrun Cancun or Cabo. You'll save even more by staying in a less well-known area, like Tulum. Not really up for sand and surf? Try another nearby exotic destination: Iceland.

Take a cruise. When you hear the word cruise, you rarely think inexpensive, but you can take a three or four day trip for less than one thousand dollars as long as you get an inexpensive cabin. And no matter where you stay on the ship, your meals, entertainment and most amenities are included. If you're looking for the island experience, cruise to Puerto Rico or the Bahamas. If you're more of a nature lover, think Alaska or Canada.

Ask for honeymoon money in lieu of gifts. It's becoming more and more accepted to request cash these days and most friends and family will be glad to help you out. If you feel a little silly accepting checks, set up a honeymoon registry before your wedding. Put together your trip itinerary and then ask guests to finance it in sections.
