Cures for Dog Diarrhea
Overview
Dogs get diarrhea for any number of reasons. It could be due to eating some prime specimen they discover on their walk or in the treasure trove that is the garbage can, or it could be a sign of a more serious problem, such as irritable bowel disease or colitis. This doesn't mean that every time your dog gets diarrhea you should rush him to the veterinarian immediately. There are some diarrhea cures that you can try at home first.
Instructions
Step 1
Feed your dog a bland beef and rice diet. This may be all you need to do to get your dog's stomach back to normal shape. A good thing to try is plain white rice with cooked ground beef mixed into it. Start with about a cup of each. Then feed more if your dog will take it. If your dog isn't privy to the beef and rice, you can also try raw ground beef.
Step 2
Give your dog canned pumpkin. Due to its high fiber content, canned pumpkin can be a very effective remedy for both diarrhea and constipation in dogs. Just be sure to buy pure pumpkin and not pumpkin-pie filling, which has spices in it that could actually further irritate your dog's digestive system. Many dogs will eat the pumpkin if you simply pour it into their bowls. If not, you might have to mix it with some meat in.
Step 3
Try Pepto Bismol or Immodium. The same stuff that humans take for diarrhea can also work for your furry friends. The dose you want to give your dog will depend on his weight. A good rule of thumb is half a teaspoon or a quarter of a tablet per 20 lb. You can give your dog this medication every six to eight hours for one to two days.
Step 4
Make an appointment with a veterinarian. If your dog doesn't get better within 48 hours of your following steps one, two and three, it's best to take your pooch to a professional. Your dog may have a parasite or a serious infection that requires further treatment, such as anti-inflammatory medication or antibiotics.

tip
When your dog has diarrhea, make every effort not to leave him alone. Due to the nature of the illness, the dog may need to go outside and "potty" once an hour or more.
warning
Call your veterinarian before administering raw meat or over-the-counter medication to your dog, especially if he is on other medication or has serious health problems.
